Global Breastfeeding Week is being observed from August 1 to August 7 across the globe including Pakistan. However; this initiative cannot just be a one week effort; what we need is strong political will and sustained advocacy efforts around the year to promote this critical issue. Each hour 95 babies can be saved globally if a mother breastfeeds in the first hour of its life. In Pakistan, where newborns account for nearly 50 per cent of all child deaths, breast feeding in the first hour of birth can prevent deaths of nearly 53, children every year. This could prevent thousands of Pakistani children from dying each year.
Breastfeeding practices are critical for child health and growth. This paper investigates demographic factors, socioeconomic status, and information sources that affect breastfeeding practices in Sindh Province, Pakistan. A secondary analysis was performed of data on 10, women with a birth in the preceding two years who had participated in the —14 Maternal and Child Health Program Indicator Survey. Multiple logistic regressions were used to test the association between breastfeeding status ever breastfed and still breastfeeding and age, number of living children, residence, education, wealth, information sources about breastfeeding, assistance during delivery, and place of delivery.
Breastfeeding is a free service that a newborn can avail immediately after birth and this is his or her right as well. Said Mr. This event was organized under the EVERYONE campaign to bring stakeholders into dialogue and develop consensus on the issues and the way forward for promotion and protection of breastfeeding in the country. Save the Children also launched a research report and a documentary about the breastfeeding situation in Pakistan. It is for the first time in Pakistan that the Breastfeeding Code violation has been studied and documented in the form of a research report by Save the Children.
